Slow Cooker Brown Sugar Pulled Pork

I am often tasked with bringing a main dish to church potlucks and pulled pork is always a big hit. To be honest our church potlucks are big, and lucky for me, because I am a Crock-Pot Lady I have several slow cookers (I think my slow cooker count was 8 at last count!)

So I bring two or three Crock-Pots of this yummy brown sugar pulled pork to church along with a big bowl of homemade coleslaw and buns (always some gluten-free buns for those who are on a GF diet).

This pulled pork recipe features some brown sugar for added sweetness as well as a little apple cider vinegar which brings some tanginess to the meat.

There is a simple spice rub to rub into the meat before it goes in the slow cooker so that your meat is perfectly seasoned.

And then you can use your favorite brand of bottled barbecue sauce (or homemade BBQ sauce if you are feeling inspired).

The meat comes out super tender with a ton of flavor and is always a big hit with everyone at the potluck.

And leftover freeze up great for another meal!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Can You Leave Pulled Pork In A Slow Cooker?

Pulled pork can be cooked in the slow cooker for anywhere from 6 to 12 hours. This recipe calls for 6 to 8 hours, however that is the minimum time for the pork to be done. You can cook it longer if you want to. Once cooked you can keep the pork on the WARM setting for up to 4 hours to keep the pork warm for serving at a party.

What Can I Make With Pulled Pork Besides Sandwiches?

If you don’t want to make sandwiches with the pulled pork you can use the shredded pork in wraps, on salads, in quesadillas, in tacos, or just eat plain as is or over cooked rice. Use your imagination and come up with your own way to eat the delicious pulled pork!

Can You Make Pulled Pork The Day Before?

Pulled pork is super versatile and you can of course make the pork the day before your party or get-together. In fact, you can make your 3 to 4 days ahead of time and stash it away in food storage bags or containers in the refrigerator. To re-heat the pulled pork in your slow cooker the day of your party just add the pork to your slow cooker, add about 1/4 cup of water, cover and cook on HIGH for 1 to 2 hours until everything is nice and hot. Then turn your slow cooker to the WARM setting to keep it warm for serving.

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, paprika, salt, pepper and garlic powder to create a spice rub for the pork. Set aside.

  • Trim off excess fat from the pork and discard the fat. Cut the pork roast into about 4 to 5 large chunks so that the pork will fit inside a 6 quart or larger slow cooker.

  • Sprinkle and rub the brown sugar spice rub into the pork chunk and place in the slow cooker.

  • Sprinkle the thinly sliced onion around and on top of the meat.

  • Pour about 1 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce over everything in the slow cooker.

  • Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours, or until the pork is very tender and is falling apart.

  • Remove the meat and onions from the slow cooker and place in a large mixing bowl.

  • Shred the pork using two forks.

  • Discard all but about a cup of the liquid from the slow cooker.

  • Add the shredded pork and onions back into the slow cooker and add the remaining 1 cup barbecue sauce and apple cider vinegar to the slow cooker and stir to coat all the meat with the sauce.

  • Recover slow cooker and turn the temperature to the WARM setting to keep the meat warm while serving.

  • Serve meat on buns or rolls, topped with coleslaw if desired and enjoy!

Notes

To make clean up easier you may wish to either line your slow cooker with a slow cooker liner or spray with non-stick cooking spray.
