Lately I've been buying a lot of kids tapes, mostly cartoons. Especially if they have weird bootleg artwork featuring a crooked ass Felix the Cat or an emotionally confused Caspar the Friendly Ghost. This has lead me to end up with many mystery videos, and what could be more exciting than that? I found this Hansel and Gretel tape at a thrift store and the cover was totally amazing and borderline psychedelic (not pictured). There were no credits at all, and the only date seemed to be the year it was manufactured. I bought it if for nothing else than to satisfy the curiosity. No credits at the beginning of the film, it looked 50's to me, and was dubbed…

Viewed this as a English dubbed VHS from 1988. It's a German production, so the dubbing makes it feel surreal, as if even the sounds of the world are out of sync. The feature on the tape had no opening credits, which made it even more mysterious.
The movie has some really fun sets and effects. There are lots of jump cut tricks, making things appear magically. There are also some weird little puppeted things, as well as some stop motion inanimate objects, these all occurring in the home of the witch, who was very entertainingly portrayed. She cackles constantly, calling the girl a "lazy bones" incessantly, while asking the boy if he's fat yet about as many times.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. It must be time to dig into mid-century children's fantasy films.

Everything in this movie is terrible. The acting, the production design, the effects, the music and, most of all, the creepy snowman.
